It was a season of change as long time assistant coach Adrian Autry took the reigns replacing Jim Boeheim as the head coach. Autry was able to retain Boeheim's freshman class and brought in transfers JJ Starling, Naheem McLeod, Kyle Cuffe, and Chance Westry. Autry switched the defense to man-to-man and planned to use a deep bench. Unfortunately injuries and suspensions would reduce that bench, and Westry was the first impacted with a season ending injury in the preseason. Junior Benny Williams would lose his starting position due to violation of team rules.

The Orange started out strong with three wins, including a dramatic comeback win against Colgate. The Orange trailed b 24 points in the second half before rallying with a 20-4 run, and Judah Mintz scored 10 straight. Chris Bell would lead the Orange with 25 points 79-75 win.

Syracuse would be overwhelmed at the Maui Classic losing to #7 Tennessee 73-56 and #11 Gonzaga 76-57 before beating host Chaminade 105-56. The Orange would then have an impressive 80-57 win over Chaminade in the SEC/ACC Challenge. Mintz would lead the way with 33 points, including 13-15 from the charity stripe.

The Orange would struggle in a loss to Virginia before having five consecutive wins including impressive victories over Georgetown, Oregon, and Pittsburgh.

The Orange would lose to #14 Duke 86-66, and center Naheem McLeod would injure his foot ending his season. Maliq Brown would have to replace him for the balance of the season.

Syracuse would complete the season sweep of Pitt with a 69-58 win at the Peterson Center. The next game against Miami would be a tight contest. The game was tied when Mintz fed Quadir Copeland a pass for a buzzer beating game winning basket giving the Orange a 72-69 victory.

The Orange defense started to struggle without McLeod anchoring the center position, and the team lost four of six games. Williams would continue to have issues and was permanently suspended after the Wake Forest loss.

Syracuse would then have its biggest win of the season with a 86-79 win over #7 North Carolina. The two teams were tied 42-42 at the half. The Orange's guard play was stellar in the second half with Mintz scoring 16 and Starling 13. Copeland played terrific defense over the last few minutes forcing some turnovers. Syracuse would shoot 63% from the floor from the game, making up for the fact they were out rebounded 31-23 by the Tarheels.

The Orange would win four of its next five as Chris Bell found his shooting stroke. The would win their 20th game of the season against Louisville, before losing their regular season finale against Clemson.

Syracuse entered the ACC Tournament knowing they had to win some games to get to the NCAA tournament, but their confidence was high following their solid play down the stretch. Their first round opponent was North Carolina State, whom the Orange had beaten twice. Unfortunately, Wolfpack would go on a hot streak winning the ACC tournament, and started by easily beating the Orange with a 21-4 run early in the second half that blew the game open.
