Starling struggled with his shooting early his sophomore year, as well as with his role for the Orange. However, by mid season his three point shot improved, and he learned to fit into the Orange offensive scheme. He had a season high 26 points with four three-point shots in a win over North Carolina State.
Starling was the leader of the team his junior season, and was counted on to make the shots during the critical moments. He struggled with his perimeter shooting, but was effective driving to the basket. He would break his hand during practice in November and would miss seven games as a result. The Orange would struggle offensively without his presence. At mid season he would rejoin the team, and moved to point guard to replace an ineffective Jaquan Carlos. By season end Starling would move back to his natural shooting guard position. Starling would have a career high 38 points in an early season double overtime win against Youngstown State. He scored 27 against Florida State to lead the Orange to an ACC tournament first round win. Starling was named All ACC Honorable Mention his junior year.
There were high expectations for Starling his senior year, though unfortunately he would not reach them. Starling would miss a couple of games to start his senior season when he injured his hamstring in the season opening win over Binghamton. He would struggle with his shooting all season both at the perimeter and at the free throw line. He scored only six total points in his last four games and finished with a career low 10.9 ppg scoring average.
