Comments:

Syracuse would enter the game as a 17 point underdog to the #1 ranked Duke Blue Devils. Duke featured a talented line up that include Zion Williamson, R. J. Barrett and Tre Jones. Fellow freshman star Cam Reddish would miss the game due to illness.

Duke would jump out to a 12-0 lead. Syracuse's Tyus Battle would get hot with inside and outside shots, and get the Orange back into the game. His made three point shot at the 12:14 mark in the first half made the score Duke 18, Syracuse 17. At the six minute mark, Duke's talented point guard Tre Jones would separate his shoulder diving for the ball and miss the rest of the game. Syracuse's Frank Howard would pick up his third foul with 13 minutes to go in the half and had to sit the remainder of the period. With about 9 minutes to go in the first half, Duke's Williamson would grab a rebound and run the court. Syracuse's Marek Dolezaj would draw a charge from Williamson that sent Dolezaj flying; Dolezaj weighed 100 lbs less than Williamson.

As time expired at the end of the first half, Syracuse's Elijah Hughes launched a 75 foot shot, and made it, making the half time score Duke 49, Syracuse 48. Four Syracuse players were in foul trouble with three fouls each: Howard, Dolezaj, Paschal Chukwu and Bourama Sidibe.

Early in the second half Oshae Brissett would make a layup giving the Orange their first lead 50-49. Duke would quickly resume the lead, and would expand it to 7 points. However, the Blue Devils could never pull away. With about three minutes to go, Chukwu made a layup and put the Orange ahead 81-80. The two teams would battle back and forth over the final three minutes. Syracuse took a 85-84 lead on a Tyus Battle jump shot with 1:13 to go. Zion Williamson would get fouled on a phantom call with 17 seconds remaining; he would make one free throw to tie the game and miss the second. Syracuse would have a chance to win the game, but Battle missed his three point shot with 4 seconds to go, sending the game into overtime.

Syracuse would jump out to the lead on the tip off as Hughes grabbed the tip and raced down the court for the easy layup. Alex O'Connell would make a three point shot giving Duke an 88-87 lead; Battle would help Syracuse quickly resume the lead with a jumper on the next possession.

Paschal Chukwu would make two free throws with 1:21 left in the game to give Syracuse a four point / two possession game. Duke would get back within two; with 44 seconds left Frank Howard would throw a beautiful alley-oop pass to Chukwu would slammed the ball home again putting the Orange up by four. That would be the final score as Syracuse would keep Duke from scoring again.

The game had many memorable moments and standout players. Duke's Barrett and Williamson were outstanding and dominate inside. Syracuse's Battle had 32 points and showed off a dazzling display of shots, including his trademark step-back jumper. Paschal Chukwu had the best game of his career with 18 rebounds and 10 points. Frank Howard, who had struggled all season recovering from an injury, scored 16 points in the second half.

It was the biggest upset victory in Syracuse history. It was the first time a #1 ranked Duke team lost at home to an unranked team, and also the only time a team other than North Carolina had upset #1 Duke at home.
