Indiana nipped Syracuse 74-73 to win the National Championship. Indiana led at halftime 34-33. Syracuse led by 8 points (52-44) with 13:09 remaining. Both teams were tied at 68-68 with 2:27 left. Syracuse led 72-70 with 38 seconds to go. Howard Triche was fouled, made one free throw and missed another. Indiana raced down the court and Keith Smart hit a basket to make the score 73-72. Derrick Coleman was immediately fouled, and he missed the front end of a one-and-one. Indiana came back down the court and Keith Smart hit a corner jumper with 5 seconds to go to give Indiana the 74-73 lead. Syracuse had a last chance play, but no luck, as the Hoosiers won.

Steve Alford had a fantastic shooting night going 7-10 from three point range, many of those on pull ups on fast breaks. Alford had a game high 23 points. Game hero Keith Smart was 9-15 from the floor and scored a total of 21 points. Dean Garrett had 10 rebounds to lead the Hoosiers.

Derrick Coleman had 19 rebounds for Syracuse, a record for a freshman in the national championship game. Rony Seikaly had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Sherman Douglas led Syracuse scoring with 20 points, along with 7 assists.

Bob Knight was the coach for the Hoosiers.
