Comments:

Syracuse entered the game with the nation's longest home court winning streak, having won 57 straight games. The game was the last game to ever be played at Manley Field House as the Orangemen were moving to the new Carrier Dome for the next season.

Syracuse played well in the first half and led 30-16 at halftime. The team led 38-23 with 13:58 and the student body started to sing 'Auld Lang Syne'.[1] That celebration would premature as the Hoyas started to rally.

Ed Spriggs shot with 30 seconds left tied the game at 50, when the officials ruled Syracuse's Roosevelt Bouie goaltended on the shot. Eddie Moss had a chance to put the Orangemen ahead but missed the front end of a one-and-one with 26 seconds to go. Marty Headd reached in and fouled the Hoyas' Sleep Floyd with five seconds to go. Floyd would make both of his free throws to give the Hoyas a two point lead. Louis Orr would miss a 30 footer desparation shot, as the Hoyas would go on to win, snapping the Orangemen's winning streak.

After the game, Hoya coach John Thompson would utter the final epitaph "Manley Field House is Offically closed", and a rivalry was born.
