Boeheim transferred to Syracuse after his senior season as a graduate transfer. Boeheim would use his "old man's" style of game to get to the hoop for higher percentage shots, which included various hook shots and layups. He also became adept at taking advantage of the mismatches on the perimeter to be an effective three point shooter. He had a big game early in the season scoring 26 points to lead the Orange to a win over Indiana in double overtime. He struggled with his free throw shooting mid season; he would correct that issue and make 26 of his last 32 free throws for the year. He saved his best game of the season for the last game. In the ACC tournament, his brother Buddy had been suspended and Syracuse needed additional scoring. Boeheim would pick up the slack with a season high 28 points on six three point shots in the loss.

Boeheim would score 1,253 points in his collegiate career. He would earn first team Academic All-American status his senior year at Syracuse.

Jimmy Boeheim was the eldest son of Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim, as well as the older brother of Syracuse player Buddy Boeheim.
