Comments:

Syracuse beat #4 ranked North Carolina to win the 2K Sports Classic Championship at Madison Square Garden, as part of the Coaches Vs. Cancer fundraiser. North Carolina was the defending national champion.

The Tar Heels lead 39-37 at half time. However Syracuse opened the second half with a 22-1 run, which kept the Orange in control for most the second half. The Tar Heels would cut the lead to 68-60, but that was as close as they would get.

The Syracuse zone defense was extremely effective forcing poor shot selection for North Carolina (they shot 38% from the floor), and resulting in a lot of steals and turnovers. Andy Rautins had a great all around game with seven steals, seven rebounds, seven assists and eleven points. Wesley Johnson was the tournament MVP, with a 25 point, 8 rebound effort, incluing four three point shots.

North Carolina had a 44 game non-conference winning streak entering the game, which Syracuse snapped. Jim Boeheim raised his all-time win total to 803, and all-time Madison Square Garden record to 67-44.
