Malachi Richardson was a forward for Syracuse University basketball. He was highly recruited out of high school and a McDonald's All-American.

Malachi Richardson Syracuse Orange BasketballRichardson was a natural guard, but Syracuse needed a small forward, and coach Jim Boeheim started him in the small forward position. He had an explosive first step, and made opponents take notice early with his ability to score. He would be inconsistent on offense as he learned the collegiate game, but continued to contribute offensively every game. He struggled early in the year with Boeheim's zone defense, and that cost him playing time in some games. However, as the year progressed his defense got stronger, and he turned the ball over less on offense. He never found real consistency with his perimeter shot, but teams had to respect his ability to drive to the basket.

He would have a season high 23 points against Virginia in a regular season loss down in Charlottesville, hitting six of ten three point shots. He struggled in the first three games of the NCAA tournament, particularly against Gonzaga. Syracuse would meet #4 ranked Virginia again, this time in the Final Four. Richardson would continue with his tournament struggles, missing all six of his first half shots. The Orange were trailing 43-32 with 12:42 remaining in second half when Richardson stole the ball and was fouled; he would make two free throws, and over the next 12 minutes of the game, Richardson would score 19 points to help the Orange overcome the deficit and propel the Orange to an upset win to advance to the Final Four. Richardson ended up with 23 points, 21 of them in the second half, along with 7 rebounds.

Richardson would follow that up with a decent 17 point effort in the Final Four loss to North Carolina.

Richardson would announce he was declaring for the NBA draft after his freshman year. He was drafted in the 1st round of the 2016 NBA draft with the 22nd overall pick by the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets would then promptly trade his rights to the Sacramento Kings.
