Xzavier Gaines was a walk-on guard for the Syracuse basketball team for two seasons. He originally came to Syracuse on a football scholarship to play quarterback, in Paul Pasqualoni's pass option offense.

He played in one football game as a freshman reserve with four rushes for sixteen yards, as junior R.J. Anderson was entrenched in the quarterback position. He would join the basketball team as a walk on that winter, and play sparingly, appearing in only six games.

His sophomore season, he again played only one football game as a reserve, with four rushes for eleven yards. He would not play basketball that season as he focused on trying to earn the starting quarterback job for the next season with Anderson graduating.

Unfortunately, Gaines would be beat out by incoming freshman Joe Fields and Perry Patterson for the starting quarterback position his junior season. He decided to leave the football team, and joined the basketball team once the season started, again as a walk-on.

Gaines would play in only five games his junior season, failing to score in his limited appearances.

Gaines would transfer to Division II Northwest Missouri State after his junior season, and would play basketball for the Bearcats in 2005-2006 for his senior season. Gaines would demonstrate he was a solid basketball player, as the second leading scorer on the team with 13.2 ppg. He would help the Bearcats reach the Sweet Sixteen of the Division II NCAA tournament. Gaines showed he was a solid shooter with 409 total points, hitting 58-150 three point attempts (for a 38.7% rate), and shot 67-91 from the free throw line (73.6%). He also had 147 rebounds, averaging 4.7 per game.
