Hank "Whitey" Piro played one year of varsity basketball for Syracuse; he was a reserve player and did not score. He was a three time letter winner for the football team, playing wide receiver and defensive back. His brother John also played football at Syracuse, lettering in 1945.

Piro's family immigrated to the United States from Germany when he was three years old.[1]

He played one year of professional football as a wide receiver with the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles in 1941. He started one game, playing all ten games in the season, and saw action on both sides of the ball.

Hank Piro served in World War II. In 1947 he was the head basketball coach at The Citadel, going 5-11. He was later an assistant football coach at Syracuse University and a defensive coach at the University of Iowa from 1952 to 1965..

Piro passed away in 2011.
