George Noakes played forward for the Syracuse basketball team for one season. Noakes was an aggressive player with plenty of speed, and a reputation as a very good free throw shooter.
Noakes had a reputation as being a star player from the local community church leagues before he came to the University. He would earn a starting berth early into his sophomore season because of his free throw shooting ability; this was the era of the designated free throw shooter, so having that ability was a key for teams. Noakes would lead the team in scoring in his first varsity game with with a career high eight points in a 12-8 win over Hobart.
Eventually, Bernie Kates proved to be a stronger free throw shooter for the year. Noakes would not play for the second semester, and that would end his Syracuse basketball career.
