Bernie Kates played forward for Syracuse basketball for one season. He was the best foul shooter on the team when he played.
Kates was inserted into the starting lineup in mid December of his sophomore year. He was the star of the victory over St. Lawrence, scoring 14 points, including going 12 of 17 from the free throw line. He would hurt his knee in the next game against Heinz House. Unfortunately this would result in a recurring knee injury, and Kates would resign from the team in mid February.
