The Syracuse Orangemen and Penn Quakers first met in 1902. The two teams played annually most seasons from 1906 to 1955, with a disruption from 1943 to 1948 because of World War II. The two teams have met four times since 1955, the last time being in 2006.

Syracuse won eight consecutive games from 1910 to 1918, and the Quakers won 6 straight from 1918 to 1926. Syracuse would win eight straight again from 1935 to 1949. and Penn has won five of the past seven games.

Syracuse was 14-3 against Quaker coach Lon Jourdet, 3-8 against Edward McNichol, and 2-3 against Howard Dallmar.
