Comments:

Syracuse faced Furman in the Orangemen's first NCAA tournament game in seven seasons. Syracuse would need to play aggressive as Furman had a very tall front line with 6'9" Roy Simpson, 6'9" Clyde Mayes and 7'1" Fessor Leonard. Rudy Hackett was the only Syracuse starter taller than 6'5".

Syracuse Furman 1973 NCAASyracuse led by six at halftime 43-37. The Orangemen would go on a 14-2 run to start the second half, and led 67-48 with 10:47 left in the game. Furman would rally behind Roy Simpson, and cut the lead to 79-76 with 1:25 to play. Syracuse's Jimmy Lee was fouled with 56 seconds remaining, and would make both free throws extending the lead back to five. Furman would quick score 11 seconds later to make it a three point game again. Lee was fouled again with 29 seconds to go, and he would make both free throws again to make it 83-78. Furman would score nine seconds later to make it 83-80. Lee would be fouled a third time, and would finally miss a free throw. The Orangemen however rebounded the ball, and Mike Lee would be fouled. Mike Lee would miss his free throw, but it did not matter as the Orangemen let Furman's Ed Kelley drive for a layup as the buzzer expired, allowing Syracuse to win 83-82. [1][2]
