Comments:

Unranked Syracuse would meet the undefeated #1 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels in the Eastern Finals of the NCAA Tournament. Syracuse Coach Marc Guley would switch around his lineup so that he could start a taller unit against the more rugged Tar Heels.

Syracuse North Carolina Game PictureTar Heel point guard Tommy Kearns dominated the first half with his strong drives to the basket, and his pin point passing. North Carolina made 17 of 21 free throws in the first half, while the Orangemen struggled at the line making only 4 of 15 attempts. The Tar Heels would go into half time leading by nine 37-28. [1]

The Tar Heels would expand their lead to 14 points in the second half, with All American Lennie Rosenbluth leading the way. The Orangemen would cut the lead to eight points, but would never be able to get any closer. Coach Frank Maguire had the Tar Heels go into their famous four corner stall for the last twelve minutes of the game. Jon Cincebox, Manny Breland and Gary Clark would all foul out, and Carolina would have a huge free throw margin with 45 attempts versus Syracuse's 23.

The Orangemen did well on the boards, outrebounding the Tar Heels 57 to 47, with four Syracuse players having double digit rebounds. But Carolina's superior shooting from both the floor and free throw line would make the difference.

The Tar Heels win would become the first NCAA team to have a record of 30-0.
