Billy Rafter was the captain of the 1917 team, and a starting forward his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. He was a speedy athlete as he was also a star football player, playing quarterback and lettering in football in 1914 and 1915, and lettering three times in baseball (1915-16-17).
Rafter was depended upon to cover the entire court because of his exceptional quickness.
Following graduation, Rafter served in the University Ambulance Unit overseas in World War I. Rafter later played two seasons in the NFL for Rochester as a wingback.and half a season with the Syracuse Pros.

After Rafter ended playing football he would become an attorney.
