Williams would get caught cheating on an exam, and would be suspended from school prior to his junior season. He would eventually return to the university and the football team for the 2009 football season. However, midway through his senior season, he would quit the team. He would still lead the team in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns as the Orange went 4-8.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers would draft Williams in the 4th round of the 2010 NFL draft with the 101st overall pick. Despite his troubled past, he would make the Buccaneers squad for the 2010 season. Williams would immediately become a starter for the Buccaneers, starting all sixteen games his rookie season and amassing nearly a thousand yards (946), along with 11 touchdowns. After four successful seasons in Tampa, Williams was traded to the Buffalo Bills in 2014. He would play only 9 games that year for Buffalo, and would be released at the end of the season.
