Melvin Tuten was a talented athlete who played tight end on the Syracuse football team, lettering three times. His senior season he joined the basketball game as a forward, and played four games in a reserve role.
Tuten was a big man and capable of blocking well. He was adept at catching the pass, and moved very well for a big man; however, he never really enhanced those skills while as school. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round of the NFL draft, and converted to an offensive tackle.
Tuten would play six seasons in the NFL (one additional year on the IR for a knee injury that effectively ended his career), spending time with the Cincinnati Bengals, Denver Broncos, and Carolina Panthers. He did catch two passes in his career, and scored a touchdown his rookie year for the Bengals.
