Joe Minsavage was starting wide receiver (end) for the Syracuse football team for three seasons, receiving three letters. He was a lanky receiver known for his constant effort on the field. Minsavage would play two years on the Syracuse basketball team as a reserve guard. He would bring the same effort to the basketball court that he displayed in football.

Minsavage would graduate from Syracuse in 1937, and would be the athletic director and a teacher at Jamesville High School. After a couple of years, he would become the head football coach at Onondaga Valley Academy, along with teaching there.

Minsavage joined the Navy in 1942 with the outbreak of World War II. He would get training in artillery. On June 19, 1943, Ensign Joseph Minsavage's Henry Knox class ship was hit during battle in the Atlantic, and he was missing at sea. He was never found and presumed dead.
