John Karpis was a reserve forward for Syracuse basketball for two seasons. Karpis was part of the Canadian Connection in the early 80s that saw players such as Leo Rautins and George Papadokas come to Syracuse.

Karpis would see very little playing time his freshman year, appearing in only 10 games. His sophomore year he would see even less playing time, and he would transfer to Boston University after the year.

He would later transfer from Boston University to the University of Toronto, where things worked out better for him. Karpis would be a starting forward his senior year at Toronto, and would be named to the OUA East 2nd Team All-Stars.
