John Emerich Syracuse Orangemen BasketballAs a senior at Hershey High School, Emerich helped lead his team to the regional championship. He came to Syracuse on a full scholarship and played on the freshman's basketball and football teams. Unfortunately in spring football practice he would injure his knee.

Emerich would quit playing football due to his knee injury, and would focus on basketball. His sophomore year he was a reserve forward and center on the varsity. He would serve in that same role his junior season.

With the outbreak of World War II, Emerich would be called into the Army. He served in the 102nd Infantry in Europe, and was awarded the Bronze Star. Emerich would be in the infantry from 1943 to 1945.

He would return to Syracuse for his senior year in 1946-47. He tried out for the basketball team, but with a GI Bill paying for his education already, decided to focus on his education instead. Emerich would graduate from Syracuse in 1947 with a business degree.
