The Syracuse Orangemen and Western Kentucky Hilltoppers first met in the 2nd round of the 1978 NCAA tournament. The Hilltoppers would upset the favored Orangemen in overtime 87-86.
The Orangemen and Hilltoppers met again in the 2nd round of the 1987 NCAA tournament. This time the Orangemen easily beat the Hilltoppers 104-86. The two teams have not met since then.
