The Syracuse Orangemen and Virginia Cavaliers first met in the 1984 NCAA Tournament, with the Cavaliers winning 63-55.

The two teams first met in the ACC in 2014, with the game to decide first place in the ACC regular season. The Cavaliers would win 75-56, blowing a tight game open with about 9 minutes to go.

The two teams would meet in the 2016 NCAA Elite Eight, with Virginia a #1 seed and Syracuse a #10 seed. The Cavaliers would have a 15 point lead with just under 10 minutes to play in the game, when the Orange would rally behind tenacious team defense and an outstanding offensive stretch by Malachi Richardson, who scored 21 points in the second half. The Orange would win 68-62, moving on to the school's 6 Final Four.
