The Syracuse Orangemen and Marquette Golden Eagles first met in 1942. The two teams would play in 1942 and 1943, and then not meet again for 38 years.

Marquette joined the Big East for the 2006-2007 season. Syracuse would go 5-2 against Marquette in the Big East conference. The two teams would never meet in the Big East Tournament, but they did play each other twice in the NCAA while both members of the Big East Conference. The Golden Eagles would beat Syracuse in the 2nd round of the 2011 NCAA tournament and Syracuse would beat Marquette in the Elite Eight of the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
